Zakat-ul-Fitr (Sadaqat ul-Fitr)  is part of the fast of Ramadan

It a duty which is Wajib on every Muslim, whether male or female, minor or adult as long as he/she has the means to do so.

It is characterised by the following elements:

  • It must be physically given to the poor on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr (it must be organised well in advance)
  • It signifies the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan.
  • It cannot be given after the Eid prayer, unless one has a valid reason for such a delay.
  • It consists of approximately 5.5 pounds of rice, wheat, dates, or similar food items.
  • It is NOT recommended to give the Zakat ul-Fitr in the form of money, clothes, or any other non-food items. However, the Hanafi School of Thought allows to give the Zakat ul-Fitr in monetary form (if one wishes to do so).
  • It should be given on behalf of every Muslim, whether male or female, adult or minor.

Imam Malik and Ash-Shafi'i say that it is Fard (Obligatory) but Abu Hanifa says that it is Wajib and not Fard.

It is Mandatory for Young and Old. A Husband must pay the zakat al-Fitr of his wife as he is obliged to maintain her, according to Malik,Ash-Shafi and Ahmad, but Abu Hanifa says that he is not obliged to pay her Zakat al-fitr.

3) Continue the Good Work

Let us Intend to Continue the Good Work of Ramadan,

Remember The five daily prayers are greater than fasting.

"The deeds most loved by Allah (are those) done regularly, even if they are small." (Bukhari)

Will we forget all that we learnt from this blessed month in the blink of an eye?
Will we run straight back into our past ways that we worked so hard to stay away from during Ramadan??

From the signs of Allah's acceptance of our fasting is that He helps us to become steadfast in the Deen after Ramadan.
