Hijri New Year 1439 & The Fast of Ashura

Wise are those who grab available opportunities before being handicapped by obstacles.

As we enter the new hijri year,Let us reflect on the good we have done and seek Forgiveness for the bad we may have done. What is gone, is gone, it is no use crying but let us look at the future with hope in Allah the Merciful.

Ibn al-Qayyim says:

  • "The year is like a tree, months are its branches,
  • days are the branch sticks, hours are its leaves,
  • and the breaths are its fruits."

Therefore, if one's breaths are in obedience [to Allah and His Messenger], the fruits of his tree are good. If they are in disobedience, his fruits are bitter. The harvest is on the Appointed Day, when one's fruits are found out to be either good or bitter..

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

Make the most of five things before five others:

  • life before death,
  • health before sickness,
  • free time before becoming busy,
  • youth before oldage, and
  • wealth before poverty.
  • (Saheeh al-Jaami')

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) also said:

"Lose no time to do good deeds before you are caught up by one of seven calamities awaiting you:

  • a starvation which may impair your wisdom;
  • a prosperity which may mislead you;
  • an ailment which may damage yourhealth;
  • an old age which may harm your senses;
  • a sudden death; the Dajjal; or Doomsday, which is indeed the hardest and most bitter."
  • [al-Tirmidhi]

The Fast of Muharram

The first month Muharram is one of the four sacred months that Allah has mentioned in the Holy Qur'an:

'Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion,so wrong not yourselves therein.' [TM Qur'an al-Tawbah 9:36]

Abu Bakrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhu'l-Qa'dah,Dhu'l-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Sha'baan." - (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 2958).

Muharram is so called because it is a sacred (muharram) month and to confirm its sanctity.

According to the Holy Companion Ibn 'Abbas, Radi-Allahu anhu. The Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam,
When migrated to Madinah, found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram.They said that it was the day on which the Holy Prophet Musa (Moses), alayhis salam,and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously and the Pharaoh was drowned in its waters. On hearing this from the Jews, the Holy Prophet,Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, said, '

We are more closely rotated to Musa, alayhi salam, than you,' and directed the Muslims to fast on the day of 'Ashura'. (Abu Dawood). Ref: The Month of Muharram By Mufti Taqi Usmani

IT IS MUSTAHABB (ENCOURAGED) TO FAST 'ON 9TH & 10TH OF MUHARRAM According to majority of Scholars including Imam Ash-Shafi'i and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaq and others : "It is mustahabb to fast on both the ninth and tenth days of Muharram, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fasted on the tenth, and intended to fast on the ninth." On this basis it may be said that there are varying degrees of fasting 'Ashura', the least of which is to fast only on the tenth and the best of which is to fast the ninth as well. The more one fasts in Muharram, the better it is.

Narrated Anas (R.A) : Allah's Apostle (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said

"From among the portents of the hour are (the following):
  • Religious knowledge will be taken away (by the death of Religious learned men).
  • ignorance will prevail.
  • Drinking of Alcoholic drinks (will be very common).
  • there will be prevalence of open illegal sexual intercourse.”

    Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A) : Allah's Apostle (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said

    • When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour.
    • It was asked, "How will honesty be lost, O Allah's Apostle?" He said,
    • When authority is given to those who do not deserve it, then wait for the Hour.
    [Bukhari]
