Rajab: The Seventh Month Of Islamic Calendar

The month of Rajab is the seventh month of the Islamic calendar and one of the sacred months as well.

This month is called sacred for two reasons:

  • i) Fighting therein is forbidden unless initiated by the enemy.
  • ii) Transgression of the sacred limits therein is worse than at other times.

Events In The Month Of Rajab:-

1) Al-Isra wa Al Mi'raj

The most important event took place in this month was "Isra (The Night Journey) and Mi'raj" (Ascension to heavens) that the prophet Muhammad with whom mercy and peace had taken during a single night around the year 621 CE.

This event has been described briefly in the holy Qur'an; "Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing." (T.M.Q. - 17:1)

2) The Tribe of Muzina Embraced Islam

It was the same holy month, when Hadhrat Bilal Ibn Haritha (R.A) brought a congregation of four hundred men named Banu Muzina in the presence of the Holy Prophet. They all embraced Islam and became followers of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) in the year 5 A.H

3) Battle of Tabuk

The battle of Tabuk took place in Rajab 9 AH. This was the last battle which the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) participated in.

4) The second Oath of Aqabah "Bai't al-Aqabah" took place in Rajab.

5) Al-Quds Was Set Free

It was also in Rajab, of the year 583 AH (1187 CE), that Salah al-Din marched into Jerusalem, liberating it from the clutches of the crusaders who had taken it and ruled it for close to a century.

6) Abolition of the Khilafah (1342 AH/1924 CE)

In the same month "Rajab", the saddest event in Islamic history took place, with the destruction of the Caliphate.

Deaths in Rajab:-

  • Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A) passed away on the 15th of Rajab 150/767.
  • Imam Shafi'i (R.A) passed away on the 14th Rajab 204/817
  • Imam Muslim (R.A) passed away on the 25th of Rajab 261/874
  • Imam Nawawi passed away on the 14th of Rajab 676/1277.
