Dates were the food that Allah provided for Mary after she gave birth to Prophet Jesus under the palm tree. Allah inspired Jesus, her blessed infant, and his future messenger to the children of Israel, in one of the early miracles of his birth to say to her: 'Shake the trunk of the palm-tree, and it will drop ripe dates on you, so eat, drink, and comfort your eyes (with what Allah gave you).' (Qur'an 19:25).
Sunnah of Opening the Fast : 'if anyone of you is fasting, let him break his fast with dates. In case he does not have them, then with water. Verily water is a purifier.'
Sunnah of Tahneeq for the New born
The scholars are agreed that it is mustahabb to do tahneek with dates for the child when he is born; if that is not possible then to use some similar kind of sweet. The dates should be chewed until they become soft enough to be swallowed, then the child's mouth should be opened and a little of the dates put in his mouth. (Sharh al-Nawawi ala Muslim, 14/122-123)
Dates were among the very first fruits cultivated on earth. A product of dry subtropical climatic conditions.
It is also reported that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) sometimes ate dates with butter, bread, or alone. Dried dates are moist in the first degree.
Many of the benefits of eating dates are prominent for the dwellers of hot climates. As for the dwellers of cold climates, particularly those who are not used to it, eating dates immoderately can cause glaring of the eyes, headache, and damage teeth. These adverse effects can be overcome by eating almonds and poppies. (Medicine of the Prophet).
Nowadays, most Saudi women follow the example of Mariam (AS) both before and during labour. It is believed that dates help in delivery by providing substances that support the uterine muscles at the end of pregnancy and that the fruit also helps in easing constipation after delivery and decreasing bleeding.
Dates are also considered very good and natural nutrition for nursing mothers and their babies. Dates are in fact one of the first things Saudi babies taste after milk.
The sugar content of ripe dates is about 80%; the remainder consists of protein, fat and mineral products including copper, sulphur, iron, magnesium and fluoric acid. Dates are high in fiber and an excellent source of potassium.
Bedouin Arabs, who eat them on a regular basis, show an extremely low incidence rate of cancer and heart disease.
