About The Book

Tafsir al-Baghawi also known as Ma'alim at-Tanzil is a classical Sunni tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) by Husain bin Mas'ud al-Baghawi, written as an abridgement of Tafsir al-Tha'labi. Scholars like al-Khazen, Ibn Taymiyyah and al-Kattani spoke highly of this Tafsir – and described how devoid it was of weak Hadith. The book was printed many times in India and Egypt; it was ordered to be printed along with Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir in one volume by Sultan `Abd al `Aziz ibn `Abd al Rahman al-Faisal.

His methodology in the book, as said by the author in the preface of the book, was to interpret the verses independently and then follow that with what erstwhile scholars wrote on the same like Ibn 'Abbas, Mujahid, or Ata'. He avoided delving into linguistic complexities. He mentioned some pre-Islamic anecdotes, Isra'iliyyat, but added no comments to them. Imam Dhahabi said that the book as a whole is better than many other books of Tafsir.

About The Author

Abu Muhammad al-Husayn ibn Mas'ud ibn Muhammad al-Farra' al-Baghawi, born 433 AH or 436 AH, was a renowned Persian Muslim Mufassir, hadith scholar and a Shafi'i jurist  best known for his major work Tafsir al-Baghawi. Al-Farra was in reference to trading with fur, and al-Baghawi was a reference to his hometown Bagh or Baghshur (then in Persia) between Herat and Marw ar-Rud. He died in Marw ar-Rud. He is also famous for his other works on hadith such as Sharh al-sunnah and Masabih al-Sunnah, the latter became famous as Mishkat al-Masabih with the additions of al-Tabrizi.

He learnt the various recitations of the Qur’an from Abu Nasr al-Marwadhi and attended Fiqh and Hadith classes for many scholars and became an authority in Islamic sciences. His students later included prominent scholars like Abu al-Makarim, Abu al-Fath and others. Scholars like Ibn Taj al-Subki and his father, al-Taqi al-Subki, praised al-Baghawi’s knowledge and trustworthiness in his works in the interpretation of Qur’an, Hadith and Fiqh. He was a student of al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Marwa al-Rudi.
