About The Book
Asbab un-Nuzul is an Arabic term meaning "occasions / circumstances of revelation", is a secondary type of tafsir directed at establishing the context in which specific verses of the Qur'an were revealed.
Knowledge about the asbab Asbab un-Nuzul helps one to understand the circumstances in which a particular revelation occurred, which sheds light on its implications and gives guidance to the explanation (tafsir) and application of the ayah in question for other situations.
This is the translation of the great work 'Asbab un-Nuzul' by the great Muslim scholar Abu Al-Hassan Ali ibn Ahmad Al-Wahidi An-Nisaburi.
About The Author
Abul Hasan Ali Al-Wahidi son of Ahmad Bin Muhammad, was born in 398 hijri, in Nisabpur. He was a great scholar of Shafi'i school of thought, a renowned classical scholar with great knowledge of Tafsir of Quran.
Expert in Commentary of the Holy Qur'an, Asbab Al-Nuzul Al-Qur'an (Causes of the revelation of the holy Qur'an), Arabic & History. His Most famous writing is "Asbab al-Nuzul".
Abu'l-Hasan `Ali Ibn Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn `Ali Ibn Mattuyah al-Wahidi al-Mattuwi, the author of the celebrated commentaries (on the Qur'an), was the first master of his time in the sciences of grammar and Qur'anic exegesis.
The divine grace which attended him is manifest in his works; they were universally considered as excellent and were frequently cited by professors in their lessons. Three of them, the Basit (In extenso), the Wasit (medium), and the Wajiz (compendium), are on the interpretation of the Qur'an, and their titles have been adopted by Abu Hamid al-Ghazzali for three of his own works.
He composed also a treatise on the motives for which the different portions of the Qur'an were revealed; a work called the Takhbir (Indication), containing an explanation of the (ninety-nine) excellent names given to God; a full commentary on the poems of al-Mutanabbi, surpassing in excellence all the numerous works on the same subject, and containing many curious observations.
Al-Wahidi was a pupil of al-Tha`labi, the author of celebrated commentary of the Qur'an. he learned from him the science of Qur`anic interpretation, and ended by surpassing him. He died of a lingering disease in AH 468 (A.C. 1076), at Naysapur.
He said : 'The knowledge about Tafsir of the ayah is not possible without occupying oneself with their stories and explanation of (the reasons) for their revelation'.
