About the Author:
Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Hatim Muhammad b. Idris al-Razi al-Hanzali, born in al-Rayy (near modern Teheran) in the year 240/854 and died in the same city in the year 327/938, was wellknown under the name Ibn Abi Hatim. As a Traditionist (Muhaddith) he stands out in the late 3rd and early 4th century, being thé most greatest Hadith-critic after the illustrious generation of the compilers of the Sihah al-Sittah. Before having learnt Hadith from his older generation across the vast Muslimlands, he took up elementary learning from al-Fadl b. Shadhan al-Razi (d.260/873) and Ibn Wara (d.270/884) in the city Rayy. As the son of the famous Traditionist Abu Hatim al-Razi (d.277/890), it's no surprise that he learnt early a lot of Hadith from his father, and his father's friend and companion, equally famous, Abu Zur'ah al-Razi. These two persons would make the greatest influence on Ibn Abi Hatim, at least in his scholarly career. Both men figure prominently in Ibn Abi Hatim's writings and reports. Other scholars, over hundred, under whom Ibn Abi Hatim studied in his early years mostly on travels, are al-Rabi' b. Sulayman al-Muradi (d.270/883), the famous student of Imam al-Shafi'i, the Madhab to which Ibn Abi Hatim is affiliated, and Abdallah b. Ahmad, the son of the legendary Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal. Ibn Abi Hatim studied also under Muslim b. al-Hajjaj, author of the Sahih, and was even for a while al-Bukhari's personal secretary for some time. Other teachers, most Traditionists, under whom Ibn Abi Hatim studied are:
-Salih b. Ahmad b. Hanbal, the brother of Abdallah b. Ahmad
-Abbas al-Duri, the principle student of Yahya b. Ma'in
-Uthman b. Sa'id al-Darimi, author of a Radd 'ala'l-Jahmiyyah
-Muhammad b. Abdallah b. Abd al-Hakam, another student of al-Shafi'i
-Yunus b. Habib al-Isbahani, a famous student of al-Hafiz al-Tayalisi
-'Usayd b. 'Asim and others.

After finishing his far travels he setteld in his hometown Rayy for the rest of his life. Ibn Abi Hatim left no children who carried his teachings further, as he did for his father, but fortunately he left us some works, namely:
-al-Jarh wa'l-Ta'dil, one of the earliest Rijal-books covering more then 16.000 reporters!
-Taqdimat al-Jarh wa'l-Ta'dil, his richly documented introduction to the previous work covering a historical outline of Hadith-criticism;
-Bayan Khata Muhammad b. Isam'il al-Bukhari fi Tarikh, a critique to Imam al-Bukhari's great Rijal-lexicon al-Tarikh al-Kabir;
-'Ilal al-Hadith, a similar work comes form al-Tirmidhi;
-Kitab al-Marasil;
-Adab al-Shafi'i wa-Manaqibahu (reportedly he wrote also one on Ahmad)
-al-Zuhd, probably the same form as Asad b. Musa and Ahmad b. Hanbal's previous books on asceticism and:
-Asl al-Sunnah wa I'tiqad al-Din, the work reproduced shortly after this account, Insha'Allah!
