About The Book

al-Manhaj (or al-Minhaj in other prints) al-Qawim Sharh Masa'il al-Ta'lim (popularly known as Al-Muqaddimah al-Hadramiyah) is the main work in ibadah and is especially popular in Yemen, Syria, and South East Asia.

One should be deeply intimate with this text and perhaps even memorize its abridgment, Mukhtasar al-Latif. The work is based chiefly upon Imam al-Nawawi’s works and has a number of important commentaries and marginal glosses.

The most extensive gloss is the seven volume Hashiyat al-Tarmasi upon Ibn Hajar’s commentary.

About The Author

Shihab al-Din Abu al-'Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Hajar al-Haytami al-Makki was born in 909 H in Abu Haytham, western Egypt. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Hajar al-Haytami was a student of Zakariyya al-Ansari. He represents the foremost resource for legal opinion (fatwa) in the entire late Shafi'i school.

He died in 974 AH (CE 1566). He was the Shafi'i Imam of his time, a brilliant scholar of in-depth applications of Sacred Law, and with al-Imam Aḥmad al-Ramlī, represents the foremost resource for fatwa (legal opinion) for the entire late Shafi'i School. He was educated at al-Azhar, but later moved to Makkah, where he authored major works in Shafi'i jurisprudence, hadith, tenets of faith, education, hadith commentary, and formal legal opinion.

His most famous works include Tuhfah al-Muhtaj bi sharh al-Minhaj, a commentary on al-Imam al-Nawawi's Minhaj al-Talibin whose ten volumes represent a high point in Shafi'i scholarship; the four volume al-Fatawa al-Kubra al-fiqhiyyah; and al-Zawajir 'An Iqtiraf al-Kaba'ir, which with its detailed presentation of Qur'an and Hadith evidence and masterful legal inferences, remains unique among muslim works dealing with taqwa and is even recognized by Hanafi scholars like al-Imam Ibn 'Abidin as a source of authoritative legal texts valid in their own school.

After a lifetime of outstanding scholarship, the Imam died and was buried in Makkah in 974 H.
