About The Book
"Tadabbur-e-Qur’an by Amin Ahsan Islahi invites the reader to ponder and reflect on the message of the Qur’an.
This tafsir is based on the principle of coherence, and is perhaps the first sustained and successful attempt to demonstrate such coherence and to refute the oft-repeated allegation of the lack of order or integrity in the Qur’an.
The present volume covers the third chapter of the Qur’an, Surah Ali ‘Imran. It serves as an important resource for students of the Qur’an because its contents are structured into logical sections and subsections with respect to theme and content.
Each portion can thus be studied on a week-by-week or other regular basis in a systematic manner. The whole approach is to welcome enquiring and questioning minds to engage with the message of the Qur’an."
Without recognising and appreciating the coherence of the Qur’an, one may gain knowledge of certain commandments and teachings but will remain ignorant of the Qur’anic wisdom (hikmah) contained in its beautifully integrated and holistic message.
The Urdu original was first published in 1967, the result of the life-long work of Amin Ahsan Islahi (1904-1997), a pre-eminent scholar of the Qur’an. This translation will inspire and reinspire students of the Qur'an who rely on the English language in accessing Islamic source material.
About The Author
Amin Ahsan Islahi was born in 1904 in Azamgarh, India. There, he was a student, and later a long-serving teacher at the Madrasatu-Islah which specialised in Arabic and Qur'anic studies.
A leading Islamic scholar who made Pakistan his home, he was able to draw on what he learned from his own teacher, Imam Hamiduddin Farahi, combining this with a deep understanding of the Arabic language and startlingly original and independent insights.
In 1981, Islahi founded the Idara-i-Tadabbur-i-Qur’an-u-Hadith, which remained until his death (15th December 1997) the centre of most of his intellectual activities.
A quarterly journal Tadabbur was taken out in 1981 as its organ. He gave weekly lectures on the text of the Qur’an. Later, he took up deep study on the principles of Hadith and began teaching the Mu’atta of Imam Malik in weekly sittings to a close circle of students and associates.
After completing the Mu’atta, he also taught some portions of Imam Bukhari’s Sahih. Many of these lectures have been transcribed and published in the Tadabbur.
The author died in Lahore in 1997.
