About The Author

Abul Fadl Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn Ali al-Kannani al-Asqalani, may Allah be pleased with him, better known by the name of Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, was born in Cairo in 773/1372. He began his studies at the age of five and completed the memorisation of the Qur'an by the age of nine. A Shafi'i scholar and hadith master, he studied under renowned scholars in Cairo, Yemen and the Hijaz. 

Known as 'Shaykh al-Islam' scholars travelled from far away lands to take knowledge from him. Appointed to the position of chief-judge several times, he authored more than fifty works on hadith, history, biography, Qur'anic exegesis, poetry and Shafi'i jurisprudence; among the most famous of them is his fourteen-volume commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari called Fath al-Bari. He passed away in Cairo in 852/1449.  

The Dhahabi of his time and the amir al-muminin of the hadith scholars. Suyuti says that he drank from the well of zamzam and prayed to Allah to give him more knowledge than Shams ad-Din adh-Dhahabi. He is the author of over 300 books some going into lengthy volumes. He died on Friday 28 Dhi al-Hijja 852 hijri and was buried in al-Qarrafa, Cairo, now famously known as the City of the Dead (madinat al-mawta).

About The Translator

Dr. Mokrane Guezzou is a renowned British-Algerian translator of major Islamic works. His translation of Al-Wahidi’s Asbab Al-Nuzul also appears in the Great Commentaries on the Holy Qur’an series. He is also presently at work on a translation and study of Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari’s Al-Qasd al-Mujarrad fi Ma’rifat al-Ism al-Mufrad. 

About The Editor

Dr. Hafiz Ather Hussain al-Azhari is currently a lecturer in the Islamic Sciences at Hazrat Sultan Bahu Trust, Birmingham. 

Ather Hussain began his Islamic education by completing the memorisation of the Holy Qur'an at the age of thirteen. After completing his GCSE's he moved to Jamia al-Karam, where he studied Arabic Grammar under the guardianship of M.I.H. Pirzada and Mawlana Abdul-Bari Sahib. In 1995, he travelled to Bhera Sharif, Pakistan, and completed the traditional seminary course with First Class Honours. Here he had an opportunity to be taught directly by Pir Karam Shah al-Azhari, may Allah shower His mercy upon him.

Between 1996 and 1999, he studied at Al-Azhar University, Cairo, the oldest seat of Islamic learning in the world. He specialised in Hadith studies, and graduated in BA Principles of Theology in 1999. Upon returning to England, he joined the University of Birmingham, to study BA Political Science. He graduated with First Class Honours in 2003. In 2006, he completed his Mphil in Theology at the University of Birmingham on the al-Jami of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, and he has completed his PhD (Theology) at the same institution.
