About The Book
Towards Understanding the Qur'an is a fresh and highly readable English rendering of Tafhim al-Qur'an, Sayyid Mawdudi's monumental and masterly Urdu translation and commentary. Here is a Tafsir with a difference, by a scholar of an entirely different sort. An immense wealth of profound understanding of the Qur'an is here, so is a vast treasure of knowledge and deep insights, illuminating historical accounts of philological discussions, and a highly systematic exposition of social, political, economic and legal teachings.
This Tafsir answers contemporary questions, and makes the Qur'an fully relevant to the concerns of our day, yet it loses nothing of its timelessness nor sacrifices any of the traditional understanding. It demonstrates the unity and coherence of the Qur'an by centreing everything in it on its message, like gems hung on a single string. Each Surah is prefaced by an account of its background and teachings. Maps and indexes add greatly to the understanding.
Surah 25 al-Furqan
This Surah deals with some of the objections of the kuffar against the Qur'an and it's teachings . It also presents the character of the Believers as criteria to prove the truth of Islam.
Surah 26 al-Shu'ra'
Allah mentions many natural and historic signs and stories of many prophets are recounted to indicate that all prophets presented basically the same message.
Surah 27 al-Naml
The theme of the Surah is divine guidance in history. Allah sent His Prophets to different people. Some accepted them and were guided, while others denied them and they saw the consequences of their denial. The Surah also contrasts between the principles of tawhid and shirk.
Surah 28 al-Qasas
The basic theme of this Surah is the prophethood. Some aspects of the life of Prophet Mussa (AS) are mentioned to show the similarity between him and Prophet Muhammad (S). There are also answers here to the questions and doubts that were raised by some non-believers.
